SistaSoul, real names Veronny Okwei Odili was born in the bustling city of Lagos on November 8th 1984 to a Rastafarian father and a liberal mother. As a child she was exposed to music from Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Patti Labelle, Everly Brothers, Kenny Rogers, Gladys Knight,James Brown,Chaka Khan,Marvin Gaye amongst many others. When she was 3 years old, her father passed on and she had to move from place to place with her mother who did her best to raise two sons and a feisty daughter. Although she was a tomboy and full of life, truth was she was very lonely and craved a bit of solidity in her life. Music became her friend, sister and religion. When she turned 9, her childhood best friend took her to join the catholic choir. At that tender age, she had a rich voice that stood out distinctly in the rather large choir. In her early teens she discovered Macy Gray,The roots,Hugh Masekela,Sly and the family stone,Common,Arrested Development,Femi Kuti,De la soul,Erykah Badu,Angelique Kidjo,Outkast,D'angelo,Black Eyed Peas and MusiqSoulChild, people who helped influence her style. In the quest for finding herself and her spirituality, she left the church choir and decided it was time for her music to be unfolded to the world. Her Music speaks on reality, not the transient as there is nothing realer than life itself. Her music is based on her life's journey as well as her hopes and aspirations, fears and doubts, joys and sadness and a message that there is hope for all mankind. In a nutshell, it is music that is groovy and soothing, one that cuts across all class and race, age and creed, reminding one of the days mothers and sons used to sit around listening to the same songs. |
